August was pretty hot in Arkansas, and dry. Gene got a business trip to Victoria, British Columbia for a few days, and then he and Ellen united in San Francisco to visit Tom for his birthday. A week later, Rich and Natalie came to Fayetteville for a week long visit. We had a great time visiting Fay Jones buildings in Fayetteville and Eureka Springs. We saw Rob a lot, and finally Golsa returned from California late in the month.

San Francisco

We did some of the tourist things - Fisherman's Wharf and the Maritime Museum. And walked some of the neighborhoods and took pictures of the Victorian homes. It is a lovely city.

Naturally enough, Tom and Ellen spend a lot of time reading.

We call this picture "professor Tom" and have several captions...

"You interrupted my reading to tell me what?"

"My office hours are clearly posted on my office door."

Fay Jones

During Rich and Natalie's visit, they wanted to go to Eureka Springs to see the Thorncrown Chapel. We used the time to also drive about in Fayetteville to see some of the Fay Jones buildings there. Fay Jones is what Frank Lloyd Wright wanted to be when he grew up. Jones worked in a very personal and intimate style, without ego, and designed structures for the client, rather than the other way round.
